Digest 25-07

Hello Reader,

We've added a few more Women's Month events in our tech calendar! I hope I could drop by in one of these events, especially since there are a few that will be happening near our place. Nonetheless, so glad to see so many tech events to commemorate Women's Month and International Women's Day. Please do lend them your support.

I often get questions on how to bag international job opportunities, and today is no exception. So I'll take the chance to share some tips in our Subscriber Corner below.

Hope you enjoy this week's digest. Let me know what you think about it. Thanks, and until next time!

Cheers,

Rem "Kuya Dev" Lampa

There was a funny meme before that advices you to add code that slowly reduces the opacity of a webpage over time until the client pays you. But this is a whole other level. Didn't think someone would actually do this, without thinking about the legal consequences. Now, he's facing up to 10 years in prison. Yikes.

This actually makes sense. Our geography makes it really difficult and expensive to support wired telecommunications cables. Low Earth Orbit satellites and cellsite towers may be more practical and cost-effective.

For the things it was designed for, JavaScript (and NodeJS) is fast. But I think as a code compiler/transpiler, we really need to replace it with something more efficient and better memory management.

I have no extensive experience with either Go or Rust, so I can't give any opinion on whether they should've gone for Rust, but I think you can't go wrong with either. They're estimating that Go introduces 10x improvement in performance, which is huge! So yeah, good decision by Microsoft here.

Development is still far from completion, but I can't wait. My poor machine needs this.

Man, their video demo is awesome! There's no free tier, but subscription looks cheap at $30/year for 3 licenses (i.e. 1 license per browser). I'll wait for more feedback from actual users, and if the product is really good, I could see this as a real time saver.

Magandang Araw, Kuya Dev!
I'm [REDACTED], and I've been freelancing for quite a while na. I'm still a third year student, and I really want to apply for a company. However, I guess parang di yata nag aaccept ng students ang PH-based companies, and I don't know how to get started in applying for overseas companies.
Also, due to the nature of my work, I don't have a specialized tech stack. Sa frontend, I always use React + Vite or NextJS if applicable ang use case. For the backend/api, I just use BaaS mostly. Gusto ko magspecialize or magfocus sa isang stack na may marami ring opportunities. I'm using Fastify right now and I'm planning to use NestJS for my next project. For some reason ayaw ko talaga sa PHP din kasi hehe.
If you have the time, pa advice naman po, Thanks!

Yes, it's rare for companies to hire students, especially here in the country. Usually it's only for internship. For good reason, since academic workload can often hinder one's performance at work. It's like having two full-time jobs.

I suggest to continue with freelancing, and slowly increase your rate as you build your portfolio and experience. You sound like you still want to finish your degree, so put majority of your time in that, and graduate first. No need to rush yourself (unless you're in a dire financial situation). You're in a really good position, since by the time you graduate, you'll have "years of real-world experience" already through your freelancing gigs.

You can specialize in React and NextJS. If you plan on learning JavaScript backend technologies, though, know that the market here in the country for backend JS developers isn't that good from what I observed (but don't quote me on this).

Like you already mentioned, there are more opportunities outside the country. I suggest just going ahead and applying via global job sites. Then optimize your Linkedin to attract global recruiters, by making sure you add the actual countries of any international clients you acquire through freelancing. Work on your English communication skills of course, but if you have the time, learn another language like Spanish, as this is a not-so-well-known technique that can help grow one's market.

Good luck!

The Tech Roundup PH Apr 14, 2025 DONATE Digest 25-10 Hello Reader, We have a couple of milestones this week: This is the 10th issue of the newsletter! 🎉 We reached 5,000 subscribers on our Youtube channel! 🎉 Thank you so much for all the support! People have been asking me when I'll be releasing new videos. Frankly, I don't know yet. Things have been pretty hectic, and I've been focusing any free time I have on editing episodes for a new podcast my wife and I are cooking up. I'll spend the...

The Tech Roundup PH Mar 31, 2025 DONATE Digest 25-09 Hello Reader, On Threads last week, I raised the need to force consumer tech manufacturers to bring back repairability and upgradability to their products, and it sparked some debate. It also highlighted the difference between the context of developed vs. emerging economies. I invite you to share your thoughts on the topic. Just an update on the Quantum Computing course I'm taking, we just finished the fifth session, and I'm completely lost...

The Tech Roundup PH Mar 24, 2025 DONATE Digest 25-08 Hello Reader, Months ago, I was tempted to join the casting call by RecCreate for career shifters. They're doing it again on March 28. I really want to go but it's a Friday, so it might mean I need to go on leave, which isn't possible at the moment. If you're a career shifter and you're free on Friday, I encourage you to join. People need to know that shifting careers is okay, and should be normalized. Are you a fan of Severance? If you...
