Digest 25-08

Hello Reader,

Months ago, I was tempted to join the casting call by RecCreate for career shifters. They're doing it again on March 28. I really want to go but it's a Friday, so it might mean I need to go on leave, which isn't possible at the moment. If you're a career shifter and you're free on Friday, I encourage you to join. People need to know that shifting careers is okay, and should be normalized.

Are you a fan of Severance? If you haven't watched it yet, you should! It's a masterpiece. It's so good, really good in fact that I just had to create a tribute skit for it, which I think most devs could relate to. Lol.

We're at the tailend of Women's Month, and there's still a lot of tech events around it! So make sure to hop on to the tech events calendar below to join one near you.

Meanwhile, in this week's newsletter, we discuss "Vibe Coding" and its implications, running Doom on TypeScript, and the dark side of AI!

As always, please do let me know what you think of this digest. And have a great week ahead!

Cheers,

Rem "Kuya Dev" Lampa

News and Updates

"Vibe coding" is a new term coined for the current trend of building software applications just by talking to an AI chatbot, like ChatGPT or Gemini.

I've been having fun sharing memes about it on Facebook, such as this one. But I haven't shared my real thoughts on it, until now. Although I get how people are looking at it with disdain, I have a more nuanced take.

Everyone knows I'm a huge advocate of tech inclusivity. I love that Vibe Coding is enabling non-tech people get to build software applications that they otherwise wouldn't have been able to. This allows more people to solve problems, and maybe even become tech startup founders, and all the benefits that may bring to society.

On the other hand, I don't like the way of thinking of some "Vibe Coders", claiming that you don't need to learn software development fundamentals anymore. That is a dangerous mindset, and obviously far from the truth. Vibe coding is just the first step. To be really effective at it, one still needs to reinforce it by learning the fundamentals.

Dark Sides of Artificial Intelligence

(Youtube: 60 Minutes)

Another video underscoring the unseen negative impacts of AI, from potentially harmful conversations to unethical business practices involved in gathering and training data.

These need to always be part of the ongoing conversation surrounding AI, and I will never tire of highlighting them whenever I get the chance.

TypeScript types can run Doom!

(Youtube: Michigan TypeScript)

For the young people out there, Doom is one of the first first-person shooting games ever. People have been porting this game everywhere. Don't believe me? Just check out this site.

But this... this has got to be one of the most insane ones! Doom running on just TypeScript types. Not even language itself which compiles to JavaScript. Just the types! The dedication is something to behold. Nothing short of a masterpiece.

Check out the GitHub repository if you're curious. Beware though, "What you’re viewing in this repo is basically an active crime scene. There’s blood splattered about and although it’s clear the murder weapon is still in the house… it’s not clear exactly where in the house it might be."

Kuya dev. Tips nmn kung ano una kong magandang gawin para maging software engineer. Gusto ko magshift career to Software Engineer. D ko po kasi alam kung pano ako magsisimula.. thankyou po..

Hi, head on to roadmap.sh and pick a track that interests you. Then just put in the time and effort. Be consistent, show up everyday. Make the necessary sacrifices to make it work, like avoiding Netflix and social media doom scrolling, and power through!

Things won't make sense and you won't understand concepts in the beginning, but that's okay. Keep at it, and eventually, things will come together.

Mingle with tech professionals by going to tech events and meetups. Organize a study group. And if you're lucky, you might even meet someone who can mentor you.

Good luck!

The Tech Roundup PH Mar 31, 2025 DONATE Digest 25-09 Hello Reader, On Threads last week, I raised the need to force consumer tech manufacturers to bring back repairability and upgradability to their products, and it sparked some debate. It also highlighted the difference between the context of developed vs. emerging economies. I invite you to share your thoughts on the topic. Just an update on the Quantum Computing course I'm taking, we just finished the fifth session, and I'm completely lost...
